Get off the cliff and stop killing yourself!

Having a passion for food has always been a part of me. When I'm stressed, I head straight to the food cupboard!!!! I've recently decided to change my diet and lifestyle.

Despite knowing some foods weren't healthy for me, I kept buying them and hoped I could control or stop myself from eating them

WHAT'S THE POINT OF BUYING THEM WHEN I WANT TO STOP EATING THEM!!!!

What's funny is that I changed my diet when I DECIDED to. My experience has been so rewarding and I am enjoying experimenting with different foods and cooking methods. I have so much energy now. My skin looks amazing and almost everyone around me has noticed a significant improvement.

I ANNOUNCED TO ALL MY FRIENDS AND CLOSE RELATIVES THAT I HAVE DECIDED TO CHANGE MY DIET. (JUNE 2022).

This is how I made it happen.

STEPS

1) UPGRADE THE CUPBOARD FOOD

I started by decluttering my food cupboard. I gradually replaced unhealthy snacks with healthier ones.

My first big switch was to KEEP A VERY CLOSE EYE ON THE '3 WHITE POISONS . (SALT ,SUGAR AND WHITE RICE)

IT IS TIME FOR A CHANGE

I decided to buy whole wheat food instead of plain. It was a challenge at first. I had a hard time cooking brown rice for the first time. I didn't like it because it took longer to cook and my taste buds weren't used to it. I enjoy it now, although I prefer black rice. It adds restaurant touch to my food.

2) FOOD PREPARATION

I switched from frying to grilling - there is no need to fry anymore. In order to succeed, you must prepare your own food. At least you know what you consume all the time. Don't get me wrong, I will occasionally order Thai takeout. I try to meal prep over the weekend so we have enough food to last the week.

I was surprised to find out that it took less time to prepare the healthy option food than I expected. It is only a matter of investing in the right kitchen tools that will make the process easier.

Cooking appliances to invest in:

(a) Non-stick coated pans

(b) Vegetable cutter - saves you time cutting and they are all evenly chopped (looks pretty)

(c) Food steamer

(d) A pressure cooker

3) ORGANISE YOUR MENU WEEKLY

I've been successful because I always know what I'm going to eat. The food I'm going to eat is planned and I have my snack pack prepared.

A hungry person eats everything they find!

This is why it is important to plan ahead and have healthy food options readily available. Having a weekly menu can help keep you from mindlessly snacking on unhealthy foods when you get hungry. Meal prepping ahead of time can also save you time and money in the long run.

Having a plan of what to eat when I'm hungry helps me avoid eating anything I don't like. I stay focussed on eating right.

3) PORTION CONTROL / PLATE SIZE

As someone who enjoys food, I make sure to choose food that will keep me full. I include a lot of beans. My favourite is red kidney beans. The weight of cooked carrots is much greater than that of spinach. I add more good food that fills me up. For me, a salad alone will not be enough. I will need some couscous with nuts, broccoli, cauliflower. Seeing all the colours on my plate makes me happy. My heart just melts when I see that.

As much as I dislike wearing colourful clothes, I make up for this by eating my colours.

4) SNACKING

If you don't have enough food, you'll snack. Once you fill your stomach, you won't think about food until you're hungry again. Make sure you pay attention to snack times, especially late snacks.

Sometimes I feel hungry, especially when I return from my late evening swim. I indulge in apple and peanut paste - it is lovely.

5) WATER

Water makes up most of the human body, about 60%. I fill all my water bottles. I do not want excuses. I keep sipping water throughout the day. I decided to avoid juice concentrates and fizzy drinks. When I want fruit juice, I eat the fruit.

By making small adjustments to my eating habits over time, I was able to make a lasting change without resorting to drastic measures. I hope you can also use these steps to change your diet and enjoy the many rewards that come with it.
